DD(Dad’s Diary) 89 Salt Spray part 3…

This has all been posted before , but here goes , as the salt/sea spray is lethal to helicopters , and Hovering near the ocean  alongside the navy ship was rare , but necessary  to check the flight of the aircraft whenever there was a major rotor blade or engine change , near the helicopter landing pad should they need to land in an emergency!  The hovering stirred up the ocean. The salt spray coated the fuselage(thats the outer skin of the aircraft!)The ship made their own water , so when all was normal we used the fresh water to rinse off the helicopter , but when the desalination pump was down we were forced to use an oil based cleaner on the helicopter to get the salt off right away. Kind of ironic that at sea we are surrounded by water , but not fresh water!

More to come…
